The lesson

You already know wind is air on the move, blowing from high pressure to low pressure. Here is where that difference starts: the Sun. The Sun does not heat every part of Earth the same way. Some places heat up fast and some heat up slowly, and that gap is what gets air moving in the first place.

By afternoon, land has heated up much more than the ocean right next to it.

Land heats up fast and cools down fast. Water heats up slowly and holds its heat. Over land, the hot ground warms the air above it, and that warm air rises, so the pressure near the ground drops. Over the water, the air stays cooler, so the pressure stays higher. Since air moves from high pressure to low pressure, cooler air flows in from the water toward the land.

Try it together

At the beach in the afternoon, the sand gets so hot you can barely stand on it, but the ocean water still feels cool. The hot sand warms the air above it, and that air rises. Cooler air from over the water rushes in to take its place. That rush of cool air is the sea breeze you feel on your face.

Good to know

The same idea works on a much bigger scale. The equator gets strong, direct sunlight all year, so it stays hot. The poles get weak, slanted sunlight, so they stay cold. That huge temperature gap is part of what drives the big wind patterns and ocean currents that move heat around the whole planet.
