The lesson
Extreme weather can knock down buildings and flood whole streets. Engineers design special features that fight back, so homes and towns can survive storms.
In places with hurricanes, many roofs are held on with metal hurricane straps. Strong wind pushes up on a roof and can tear it off. The straps grip the roof to the walls, so the wind cannot lift it away.
Other designs protect against other hazards. Houses on stilts and flood walls keep rising water out. Tornado shelters have thick walls and no windows, built to survive powerful spinning winds. Early-warning systems, like sirens and weather apps, give people time to reach safety before a storm hits.
No single design fixes every hazard. A flood wall does nothing against a tornado, and a tornado shelter does nothing against rising water. Engineers pick a design based on which hazard is the real risk, and what it costs.
Each weather-resistant design protects against one specific hazard, so picking the right one means weighing its benefits against its costs and limits.
