The ocean moves on two engines at once. Wind drags the surface into fast currents you can watch shift with the seasons. Density differences drive a far slower deep loop. Together they carry heat and carbon around the whole planet.

Surface water does not simply follow the wind. The wind pushes, and rotation steers the flow sideways until each basin holds a closed loop called a gyre. That steering is why currents curl into rings instead of streaming straight downwind.

The deep branch runs on density, which temperature and salt control together. Cold water is denser than warm water, and salty water is denser than fresh, so cold and salty water is heaviest of all and plunges toward the seafloor. Its slow rise elsewhere closes a planet-spanning overturning loop, the thermohaline circulation, named for heat and salt. A full lap takes centuries.

Try it together

Pour salty water beside fresh water in a tank and the salty layer sinks and slides underneath with no wind at all. That is the deep engine in miniature. Because the real loop needs centuries, heat and carbon swallowed today stay hidden in the deep for generations, so the climate you feel now partly records the past.
