The Sun as a Star: Photosphere, Corona and the Activity Cycle
The Sun is the one star whose surface can be resolved, and its layers, granulation and sunspots are read as a magnetic field wound up by differential rotation. The corona is hotter than the surface below it, which is the open problem the observations frame.

The Sun layers by heat and thickness from core to crown. The visible photosphere sits near 5800 and yields the familiar absorption spectrum, seen by direct imaging. Above it the thin chromosphere glows in emission, best at eclipses or in narrowband and ultraviolet. Beyond sprawls the tenuous million degree corona, caught by coronagraphs or X ray telescopes. Density falls steeply outward even as heat spikes, the first hint plain flow cannot explain it.
Sunspots, flares, and eruptions wax and wane on a roughly eleven year cycle driven by magnetism. Differential rotation winds the field up, buoyant loops punch through the surface as spot pairs, and snapping releases the stress as flares and mass ejections. Counts, latitudes, and polarities march together and flip each round. The cycle is a magnetic heartbeat, not a thermal one.
Above the spots lies the active atmosphere: bright patches, arching prominences, sudden flares, and mass ejections hurling plasma at the planets. All are magnetic shapes lit by trapped and rushing particles. Flares flash locally while ejections escape on a grand scale. Earth aimed clouds arrive in about a day or three, shaking magnets, sparking auroras, and testing grids.
To judge any corona story, follow the energy. The crown runs hundreds of times hotter than the surface below, so demand a courier like waves, nanoflares, or reconnection that lifts enough power and dumps it where the glow sits. No courier, no solution.
