Using Trees: Ancestral States, Dates and Comparative Tests
Once a tree exists it becomes a tool: it reconstructs what an ancestor probably looked like, dates splits against fossils and corrects comparisons between species for shared ancestry. Species are not independent data points, which is the mistake the comparative method exists to avoid.

A tree lets you infer ancestors from living tips. If every member of one subgroup shares a trait, parsimony hands that trait to their common ancestor. When a trait is scattered across the tree, you weigh gains against losses over the whole tree before deciding.
Suppose ten species share a trait and a careless study counts ten independent pieces of evidence. If the tree shows all ten inherited it from one ancestor, the honest count is closer to one. Relatives are not independent data points, so mapping traits onto the tree and counting separate origins keeps comparisons honest.
Trees also gain dates from rocks. Unstable isotopes decay at a fixed pace, and the leftover parent set against the built up daughter tells how long ago a mineral sealed. A fossil dated this way anchors its node, and dividing genetic distance by that age sets the rate for the rest of the tree. Without such anchors you get only relative order.
Two drawing habits save you from silly mistakes. Rotating branches left to right changes nothing, because only the branching order carries meaning. Rooting with an outgroup sets the direction of time from old to young. And a missing fossil is weak evidence, since preservation is patchy and gaps are expected.
Trees reconstruct ancestors, expose shared history in comparisons, and turn into dated history once fossils anchor their nodes.
