Imagine a virus inside you facing a regulated fork in the road. Down one path it hijacks the machinery at once, builds new particles, and bursts the cell to release them. Down the other it splices its genome into the host chromosome and lets the cell copy it free with every division. Locks hold the burst genes silent until conditions change.
Now pinpoint where that fork sits. The two routes split after entry: immediate copying and release, or joining and silent copying until stress arrives. Damage and stress signals flip the switch and restart the build program. The choice is a decision, never an accident.
Animal cells show you the same fork under a second name. A herpes type retreats into nerve cells and sits silent for years, hidden from defences that only strike active copying. When stress or weak defences disturb it, the virus travels back down the nerve and raises new sores. That is why some infections return to the same spot.
A last name seals your map. The joined resting genome is called a prophage while it sits in the chromosome. Quiet copying spreads it through division alone, making no particles and killing no cells. Remember the split point and you can trace any route to its end.
