Building a Source Base for a Long Essay
Assemble the reading behind a long piece: enough to know what has already been said, judged for reliability, and recorded so that every claim can be traced back to its page.

Start with a plan, not a pile. List facts you lack, context your reader needs, and proof to convince them. Then build outward from trust. Mine the reading lists of your best sources, ask your teacher, and search the library catalogue before you touch the open web. Above all, hunt for disagreement on purpose. A source that argues against you is worth several that repeat you, because answering it is what makes your case strong.
Turn your pile into a plan with an annotated list. For each source, write the full reference, a tight summary in your own words, and one line saying how it serves your question. Then review with cold eyes. If a source adds nothing, cut it however easy it was to reach. Every survivor must earn its place against your argument.
Sources only work when they speak inside your sentences. Introduce each short quote with a signal phrase that names the speaker, keep the quote brief, and follow it with what you conclude from it. Cite as you go, with exact pages. A reader should be able to find every borrowed line months later.
Keep one running bibliography from the first day you read. Record every source in one consistent style, with author, title, date, and page ranges exactly right. Adding each source the day you use it keeps references accurate and saves painful rebuilding later.
