Register Control for a Named Reader

Hold one register across a whole piece for a specific reader and purpose, shift it only on purpose, and notice where formality has slipped.

What a learner can do afterwards

  • Write the same content for two different readers and account for every change made
  • Find a slip into casual phrasing inside a formal draft and repair it
  • Break register once for a deliberate effect and explain the choice

1 · Read

Register means holding one level of formality for one reader and one purpose. Experts use special terms with each other, like naming exact storage units when writing about computers. With a named reader in mind, every word should sound like it belongs in the same room. When readers are not specialists, define terms like kilobyte plainly.

Try it together

Compare a note to a friend with a sympathy card for a coworker. The card stays formal throughout: please accept our sincere condolences, with the whole team named as sharing the loss. Same sad news, but every change in wording answers to a different reader.

Read each draft hunting for slips where casual phrasing invades formal writing. Repair every drift you find so the level never wobbles by accident. If you break register once for effect, flag the choice and explain what the break buys.

Good to know

Test control by writing the same content for two different readers. Account for every change you made between versions. If you cannot explain a change, it was drift, not design.

Keep one register for your reader, repair slips, and design every shift.
