The lesson
Writing is never finished after the first try. Revising means going back to change words and sentences so your ideas come across clearly. Editing means fixing small mistakes, like spelling and punctuation, so nothing confuses the reader.
Zara wrote: 'The dog runned fast and it was nice.' She read it aloud and heard the mistakes. She changed it to: 'The dog ran fast and looked playful.' Now the tense is correct and the word choice is clearer.
When you proofread, cover the rest of the page and look at one sentence at a time. It is much easier to spot mistakes when you are not rushing ahead to the next line.
Revise for clearer words and consistent tense, then proofread slowly to catch spelling and punctuation mistakes.
