Spell common exception words from memory that do not follow regular phonic patterns, including the days of the week
What a learner can do afterwards
- Correctly spell high-frequency irregular words (e.g. 'said', 'the', 'was')
- Write all seven days of the week correctly
- Recall and write exception words in dictated sentences
The lesson
Some words do not sound the way they look. You cannot sound them out. Words like 'said' and 'was' are tricky words. You must remember how they look.

Mia wants to write 'said'. It sounds like 'sed', but it is spelled s-a-i-d. She remembers the tricky spelling by heart.

Look at the tricky word. Say it out loud. Cover it up. Write it from memory. Check your spelling.
