Belief Systems That Travelled
Why some religions and philosophies moved far beyond where they began while others stayed local. Buddhism, Christianity, Islam and Confucian ideas all crossed borders, and each changed as it went.

Some faiths stay home, tied to one place or one people. Others pack a suitcase. Buddhism, Christianity and Islam crossed continents with traders, monks and soldiers. They carry holy books, simple ways to join, and teachers who share them. When a ruler joins, thousands often follow.
Buddhism left India about 2,500 years ago with travelling monks, reaching Central Asia, China, Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia. Christianity grew from Judaea along Roman roads and seas: Paul carried it across the empire, Constantine backed it, and in 380 CE it became Rome's official faith. Both reached far past their birthplace.
Watch Buddhism settle in China. It blended with Daoism, and the idea of nirvana bent toward Chinese hopes of long life. Statues show a laughing Budai you rarely see in India. Christians far from Rome mixed local customs into feasts and rites. New words in translation shifted meanings too.
Ask two questions of any travelling faith: what made it easy to carry, and who carried it. Open joining rules, holy books and missionaries give one answer. Traders, monks and kings give the other. Rulers, roads and monks each leave marks.
