The lesson
Marketing means telling people about what you are selling, so they want to come and buy it. You can make the best cookies in town, but if nobody knows about your bake sale, nobody will show up.
Sam is having a car wash on Saturday. He makes a big poster with a picture of a shiny car and the words 'Car Wash Saturday, $5!' in bright red letters. He puts it where lots of people will walk by.
There are many ways to spread the word: put up a sign or poster, ask an adult to post about it online, tell your friends and neighbors, or hand out flyers. The more ways you use, the more people find out.
A catchy name and a bright, simple design grab people's attention fast. 'Sparkle Car Wash' sticks in someone's head better than 'Car Cleaning Service.'
Marketing is telling people what you're selling in ways that grab their attention, like posters, social media, and word of mouth.
