Decimal equivalents of tenths and hundredths
Recognise and write decimal equivalents of any number of tenths or hundredths (e.g. 3/10 = 0.3, 27/100 = 0.27)
What a learner can do afterwards
- Write 7/10 as 0.7 and vice versa
- Convert 45/100 to 0.45
- Place 0.3 and 3/10 at the same point on a number line
The lesson
You already know tenths: cutting something into 10 equal pieces, like 3/10. A decimal shows that same amount a different way, using a dot instead of a fraction line. Three tenths is written 0.3, with one digit right after the point.
Now look at 45/100. A hundred is bigger than a ten, so hundredths need two digits after the point: 45/100 is 0.45. Compare that to 7/10, shown below, which only needs one digit: 0.7.
Count the zeros on the bottom number of the fraction. One zero, like in 10, means one digit after the point. Two zeros, like in 100, means two digits.
Tenths get one digit after the decimal point and hundredths get two, and each decimal lands on the same spot as its fraction twin.
