The lesson
You already know how to find a fraction of an amount, and you know decimals like 0.1 and 0.01. Now put both together to solve real problems with money and measuring.
A ribbon costs £3.20. Priya wants 1/4 of it. She divides £3.20 by 4: £3.20 ÷ 4 = £0.80. So 1/4 of £3.20 is £0.80.
A rope is 2.5 m long. Ben cuts off 0.75 m. Line up the decimal points and subtract: 2.50 − 0.75 = 1.75 m left.
To find a fraction of an amount, divide by the bottom number. To subtract decimals, line up the decimal points first.
Divide for fractions, line up the points for decimals, and you can solve any money or measuring problem.
