Water Safety

Stay safe in and around water: recognise dangers at pools, beaches, rivers and ponds, follow the rules of each place (flags, signs, lifeguards, staying with an adult), and know what to do in trouble — float on your back, signal and shout

What a learner can do afterwards

  • State the water safety rules for a place they visit (e.g., swim between the flags, never swim alone, walk not run at the pool)
  • Show or describe safe self-rescue: stop, float on their back, stay calm, signal and call for help
  • Explain what to do if someone else is struggling in water: shout for an adult or lifeguard and reach or throw something that floats, never jump in

The lesson

Pools, beaches, rivers and ponds are fun. Each place has rules to keep you safe. Look for flags, signs and a lifeguard. Swim between the flags at the beach. Walk, don't run, by the pool. Never swim alone, even if you swim well.

If you get in trouble in the water, follow these steps in order.
Try it together

Mia hears the lifeguard blow a whistle. She stops and looks around right away. She walks to the shallow end and waits. The lifeguard tells everyone the rules again.

Good to know

If a friend is struggling in water, don't jump in. Shout for a lifeguard or grown-up fast. Reach out with a pole or throw something that floats. Never go in the water alone to help.

Know the rules, float if you get in trouble, and never jump in alone to help.
