What a learner can do afterwards

  • Define and test for at least four properties: hardness, solubility, conductivity, magnetism
  • Group a set of materials based on test results for each property
  • Use results to explain why certain materials are chosen for specific uses (e.g. copper for wires because it conducts electricity)

The lesson

You already know materials can feel hard or soft, smooth or rough. Two more tests build on that. A hardness test checks whether you can scratch a material with something like a fingernail or a coin. If it scratches easily, it is soft. Solubility is a different test: it tells you whether a material dissolves, or disappears, when you stir it into water. Sugar dissolves. Sand does not.

Transparency tells you how much light passes through a material. Glass and clear plastic are transparent, so you can see straight through them. Wood and metal are opaque, so no light gets through at all.

Conductivity tells you whether heat or electricity can travel through a material. Metals like copper and aluminum conduct both heat and electricity very well. Magnetism is a separate test: only a few materials, mainly iron and steel, are pulled toward a magnet. Most metals, including copper and aluminum, are not magnetic at all.

Try it together

Think about the wire inside a phone charger. Copper is soft enough to bend, is not magnetic, and does not dissolve in water, but it conducts electricity extremely well. That one result, high conductivity, is why copper is chosen over materials like wood or plastic for wires.

Test each property on its own, then use every result together to explain why a material fits its job.
