The lesson

Some materials let electricity or heat move through them easily. These are called conductors: copper wire is an electrical conductor, and a metal pan is a thermal conductor. Other materials block electricity or heat. These are called insulators: the plastic coating on that wire is an electrical insulator, and a saucepan's plastic handle is a thermal insulator, which is why you can hold it safely.

Clear glass is transparent, so all the light gets through and you see a sharp picture. Frosted glass is translucent, so only some blurry light gets through. Wood is opaque, so no light gets through at all.
Try it together

Zara tests materials for a project. She stirs sugar into water and it disappears, so sugar is soluble. She stirs sand into water and it just sinks, so sand is insoluble. She holds a magnet near a paperclip and it snaps on, so the paperclip is magnetic. She bends a rubber band easily and it springs back, so it is flexible, but a wooden ruler stays straight when she pushes it, so it is rigid. She lifts a small steel ball and a same-size foam ball; the steel ball feels far heavier for its size, so steel has a higher density.

Good to know

When you choose a material for a job, name the properties that matter. 'This glass works for a window because it is transparent and a good thermal insulator' explains far more than 'it looks nice.'
