The lesson

A stiff building cracks when the ground shakes hard. Engineers now build with a trick called a base isolator. It is a pad of rubber and steel placed under a building. It lets the building rock gently on top while the ground jolts underneath.

Ocean sensors often feel the shaking within seconds of a quake. That first signal starts the whole warning chain.
