The lesson
A stiff building cracks when the ground shakes hard. Engineers now build with a trick called a base isolator. It is a pad of rubber and steel placed under a building. It lets the building rock gently on top while the ground jolts underneath.
Picture a coastal town called Bayport. When sensors under the ocean pick up signs of a big quake, computers check the data in seconds. If a wave looks likely, sirens sound and phones buzz with alerts. Because Bayport practices evacuation drills every year, families already know their path to the hill above town.
Drills are not about scaring anyone. They train your body to move fast without thinking, the same way you do not think about how to tie your shoes.
