Electron Correlation and Methods Past Hartree-Fock

Hartree-Fock lets each electron feel the average presence of all the others instead of dodging each one. Real electrons avoid each other moment by moment, and that missing avoidance costs energy. The gap between the Hartree-Fock energy and the true energy is called the correlation energy: it is defined by the averaging it corrects.

Try it together

Two families of methods recover that gap. Perturbation theory adds a cheap correction: fast, but rough. Coupled cluster builds a fuller correction from excitations: far more accurate, but its cost climbs steeply as the molecule grows. When you rank methods, cheap and rough sits at one end and costly and careful at the other.

A stretched bond breaks this picture. Near equilibrium the electrons pair neatly and one arrangement dominates, but as the bond breaks, two arrangements compete and no single picture rules. That question needs methods built for competing arrangements, not the standard single-picture tools.

Good to know

Match the method to the system and name the error you keep. A small molecule at equilibrium deserves coupled cluster, leaving only a small error at a high price. A large system on a small computer gets perturbation, and you admit the wider error bars. The choice is always accuracy against cost, stated out loud.

You name the missing avoidance, rank cheap against careful, treat breaking bonds differently, and state the error you accept.
