The first response recognises molecular patterns shared by whole classes of microbe rather than any particular one, so it works within minutes without prior exposure. Complement proteins and the changes of inflammation both bring more defence to the site.

You saw cortisol damp immune and inflammatory work. That work starts here, with a first defence that recognises patterns, not individuals. Microbes carry shared surface signatures, such as typical sugars and nucleic acids, that your own cells lack. Macrophages and dendritic cells carry pattern receptors, including Toll-like receptors, that grip these shared marks. Because the receptors are ready before any infection, the response starts within minutes, but it stays general.
When barriers break, inflammation brings more defence to the site. Mast cells release histamine, which widens vessels and makes them leaky. Redness and heat come from extra blood flow, swelling comes from fluid leaking out, and pain comes from chemicals pressing on nerve endings. Neutrophils pour in and engulf bacteria, and dead cells plus fluid can pile up as pus until macrophages clear it. Activated phagocytes release alarms that call reinforcements.
Picture a splinter in your finger. The skin barrier is broken, so nearby mast cells release histamine within minutes. The spot turns red and warm as vessels widen, swells as fluid leaks out, and throbs as chemicals irritate the nerves. Neutrophils arrive to eat bacteria, and the swelling fades only after macrophages cart the debris away.
Complement does three jobs past marking: it punches holes in membranes to burst targets, it coats microbes to invite hungry phagocytes, and its C5a signal calls in more inflammation.
Shared patterns trigger a fast general attack, vessels deliver the force, and complement bursts, coats, and recruits.
