Being irradiated means radiation reached you; being contaminated means the radioactive material is on or inside you, and keeps emitting. Dose in sieverts is how the risk from either is compared.

Being irradiated means radiation reached you, like a beam of light passing through. Being contaminated means radioactive material sits on or inside you and keeps emitting. Food sent through a beam to kill germs is irradiated, yet it comes out not radioactive at all.
Sam has a dental X-ray, which irradiates him and stops the instant the machine switches off. His friend drinks a tracer that travels to one organ and keeps emitting until it decays or leaves. The X-ray is irradiation, while the tracer is controlled contamination inside the body.
Dose in sieverts combines how much energy landed in you with how damaging that radiation type is. A dose number alone means little, since everyone already gets a small yearly background dose from rocks, sky and food. Compare a reading with background and harm thresholds before judging it.
Contamination usually carries the longer risk, since the source stays with you for days until your body clears it. Patients given iodine spit into the toilet and flush twice, because saliva and urine can carry the material. Irradiation ends when the beam ends.
