The lesson

Every ocean animal has special body parts or tricks that help it survive in the sea. These are called adaptations. Some adaptations keep an animal warm, some help it hide, and some help it catch food.

A seal has a thick layer of fat under its skin called blubber. Blubber traps body heat, so the seal stays warm even in freezing ocean water.

An octopus can change the color and pattern of its skin in seconds. This is called camouflage, and it helps the octopus blend in with rocks so predators swim right past it.

Fish like tuna and sharks have smooth, torpedo-shaped bodies. This streamlined shape lets them slice through water with very little drag, so they can swim fast to catch prey or escape danger.
