Potable Water and Treating Waste Water
Water fit to drink is not pure water, and the treatment chosen depends on what is in the source and how much energy the answer is allowed to cost. Sewage is the harder problem because most of what has to be removed is alive.

River water is not drinking water until treatment says so. Screens rake out branches and rubbish, settling tanks let silt sink, and sand filters trap the fine stuff. Then chlorine kills the bacteria and viruses no filter can catch. Each stage removes a different size of trouble, so skipping one shows up in the next.
Clean does not mean pure. Potable means safe to drink, with harmless minerals left in and germs wiped out. The sea tempts coastal deserts, but boiling seawater or forcing it through membranes drinks energy greedily. That bill is why desalination only pays where fresh water runs out.
Follow one flush through the sewage works. Screens and settling tanks strip the solids first. Then aerated tanks let oxygen loving bacteria feast fast on dissolved filth, while sealed digesters finish leftovers without oxygen and burp out methane that can power the plant. The cleaned water returns to rivers, and treated sludge becomes fertiliser.
Match each pollutant to its step and you will never mix them up. Rubbish goes at screens, silt sinks in settling, fine particles stop at filters, germs die by chlorine, and salt only yields to energy hungry desalination. Test yourself by naming what each stage removes, not just the order.
