Putting the Solvent Into a Calculation

A gas-phase result can be wrong by tens of kilojoules per mole for a charged species. A continuum treats the solvent as a polarisable medium and is cheap; explicit molecules are needed when specific interactions such as hydrogen bonds do real work.

You replace the liquid with a smooth medium that answers to charge. The medium is set by its dielectric constant, and its response is cheap to compute. It cannot show hydrogen bonds or ordered shells, because no real molecules sit inside it.

Try it together

Suppose your solute donates a hydrogen bond to the solvent. The smooth medium misses that bond, so you add the bonded partners as real molecules. You keep the medium around them for the rest of the liquid. You include only the molecules that do specific work.

A charged solute in vacuum can miss by tens of kilojoules per mole. You compare the computed solvation energy of the ion with the measured value. A wide gap tells you the shell is incomplete or the cavity settings are off. You repair that gap before you trust any barrier.

Good to know

Solvent choice moves a barrier through charge. A polar solvent lowers the barrier when the transition state holds more separated charge than the reactants. It raises the barrier when charge spreads out or neutralises on the way up.

You use a cheap medium for the bulk liquid, add real molecules where bonds do work, check ions against measured values, and move barriers by tracking charge.
