Reading a Total Synthesis as an Argument
A published synthesis is a claim that a particular route was the right one, supported by yields, characterisation and comparison with earlier work. Reading it well means separating the strategic decisions from the steps that were forced.

Treat a published synthesis as an argument that its route was the right one. The evidence is the yield of each step, the spectra that prove each structure, and an honest comparison with earlier routes. Your job as a reader is to split the plan into choices that shaped the route and steps that only fixed trouble.
Rebuild the plan by reading the forward scheme backwards, cutting bonds until simple starting pieces appear. Often you find two halves built apart and joined late: that late joining is the strategic heart. Steps that only protect, deprotect, or correct a wrong turn are the forced labour around it.
Judge each stereochemical claim against the data in the supporting information, not against the drawn structure. A wedge on paper is a wish; the spectrum is the witness. When you find a protecting group or a repeated oxidation, label it a repair, not a strategy.
Try redrawing the route with one different cut and price it honestly. Count the steps it adds, weigh the yield it risks, and say plainly whether your idea beats the authors. An alternative with its cost stated is a real argument; one without is a daydream.
