Resistance, Flow and the Regulation of Blood Pressure
Flow through a vessel depends steeply on its radius, so small changes in arteriole diameter make large changes in resistance. Pressure is held within range by fast reflexes that adjust rate, contractility and diameter, and by slower control of blood volume.

Blood moves because pressure pushes it, and resistance decides how much flows for each push. Flow equals the pressure difference divided by resistance, and the body steers local flow mainly by tuning resistance. The tightest grip sits in the small arteries, where tiny radius shifts swing resistance hugely: halving a radius multiplies resistance sixteen fold.
Pressure is guarded fast by nerves, which is why you can stand up without feeling dizzy. Stretch receptors in the large arteries sense every dip within seconds, and the brain answers by quickening the heart and tightening vessels to lift pressure back up. That neural fix buys time but cannot refill a truly empty system.
Slow control then solves the shortfall underneath. The kidneys and hormones keep more salt and water over hours to days, which raises blood volume, fills the heart better, and holds pressure up for the long run. Fast control acts in seconds through tone, slow control lasts through volume.
