The membrane is a phospholipid bilayer with proteins, cholesterol and glycoproteins set into it, and the parts drift. The model is what explains which molecules cross unaided and which need a protein.

Your trillions of cells use this border to pick what enters. The membrane is a double sheet of phospholipids with heads facing the water on both sides and tails hiding in the middle. Proteins drift in that sheet like boats: some span the whole width as channels and carriers, while others sit on one face as markers and receivers. Sugars dot the outer face as identity tags. Sideways drift is the fluid part, and the mix of pieces is the mosaic part.

Channel proteins offer guarded tunnels for ions and water, carrier proteins change shape to ferry cargo, and receptor proteins catch signals from outside. Cholesterol wedges between the tails and tunes the sheet: it stiffens the membrane when hot and stops it packing solid when cold.

Try it together

Crossing rules follow chemistry. Small non-polar molecules such as oxygen slip straight through the oily middle, but ions and large polar cargo cannot pass alone. A charge cannot dissolve in oil, so ions must travel through protein doors. Channels let matching ions flow downhill for free, while pumps spend energy to push cargo uphill. Carriers ferry large polar cargo by changing shape around it.

Good to know

Sort each traveller before you route it. Small and non-polar goes straight through the lipids. Charged, large or polar needs a protein door. Then pick the door: channel for downhill ions, carrier for ferried cargo, pump for uphill trips.

Lipids wall off the cell while drifting proteins choose exactly what crosses and where.
