Membrane Lipid Composition, Asymmetry and Fluidity
The two leaflets of a membrane hold different lipids, and enzymes spend energy to keep them different. Chain length, double bonds and sterol content set how fluid the bilayer is at a given temperature.

Picture the membrane as two layers of phospholipids, heads facing the water on each side and tails hiding inside. The two leaflets carry different lipids, and enzymes spend energy to keep them different, so each face can specialise. Vesicle buds from the last stop can only pinch off and fuse if this sheet stays fluid, and proteins float in it as channels, pumps, receptors, and anchors.
Fluidity is how easily lipids shuffle past each other. Kinked unsaturated tails push lipids apart and raise fluidity, while long saturated tails pack tight and lower it, and cholesterol tunes the result at a given temperature. When the cold stiffens a membrane, a cell can add unsaturated tails to keep things moving.
Asymmetry has a job: it lets each face send its own signals. A lipid normally kept on the inner face flips outward on a dying cell, and outside it works as an eat-me flag that marks the cell for cleanup.
Do not mix fluidity with permeability. Fluidity is lipids shuffling past each other, while permeability is how fast substances cross, which depends on size, charge, and channels. A fluid membrane can still be a strict gatekeeper.
