Vesicle Traffic: Coats, Adaptors and Fusion

Cargo leaves one compartment in a coated bud and arrives at another by fusing with its membrane. Coat proteins choose the cargo, and matched proteins on the two membranes decide which vesicle fuses where.

When skin is cut, nearby cells must ship repair proteins outside fast. The cell runs an export line: rough ER builds proteins, the Golgi modifies and sorts them, and vesicles shuttle batches between stations. Each hand-off buds a membrane bubble at one end and fuses it at the next, so cargo never floats free in the cytosol. Trace one secreted protein from ribosome to release and the whole map snaps into focus.

Coats and adaptors pick which cargo boards each vesicle, which is how direction emerges from aimless budding. Three coats run most routes: COPII carries cargo forward from the ER to the Golgi, COPI ferries strays back to the ER, and clathrin buds vesicles bound for the membrane or outside, picking cargo with adaptors.

Arrival needs matching labels. Fusion happens when matching SNARE proteins zipper the two membranes into one. Without that label checking, cargo would spray everywhere and the cell would stall. Quality control helps too: misfolded chains are held back rather than shipped.

Try it together

Follow one shipment: the ER makes it, the Golgi tags and packs it, vesicles carry it, and membrane fusion releases it outside. Block one coat type and its cargo piles up in the ER or Golgi and never reaches its destination.

Coats choose the cargo, labels choose the address, and SNAREs seal the delivery.
