Protecting Money and Identity

Once there is real money in an account, you become worth attacking. Most of the defence is a handful of habits set up once, before anything goes wrong.

No account needed. Progress saves in this browser.

What a learner can do afterwards

  • Name what a bank will never ask for, and what to do when someone asks anyway
  • Set up the account protections that matter and say what each one blocks
  • Describe the first three steps after discovering a fraudulent payment

Most scams run on two fuels: urgency and trust. A message says your account is locked, a parcel is held, or a prize expires tonight, and it wears the logo of a company you know. Real companies never rush you into handing over access, and they never ask for passwords, PINs, one time codes or remote access by call, text or email. Treat every unexpected request for money or access as guilty until proven innocent.

Try it together

You get a text that your account is locked, with a link to fix it. You do not click the link and you do not call any number in the message. You open your bank's official app yourself and check. Nothing is wrong, so you report the text and delete it. Your five minute pause just defeated the whole attack. Before anything else, check the sender letter by letter and hover over links without clicking.

Set up the protections that matter before anything goes wrong. Use unique passwords kept in a password manager, and switch on two factor authentication everywhere, starting with email, since email resets everything else. Turn on alerts for every transaction and learn how to freeze a card instantly in the app. Consider a credit freeze, which stops anyone opening new borrowing in your name. Each layer blocks a different attack route.

Good to know

If fraud appears, speed matters, because early reports get reversed far more often. Freeze the affected account first. Then tell the bank exactly which payments were not yours and file the dispute in writing. Then secure the way in: change passwords, check statements for tiny test payments thieves try first, look at your credit report, and report to the police if advised.

Slow down, verify through official channels, and react fast when fraud appears.
