The lesson
You already know that 1/2 means splitting something into 2 equal parts, and 1/4 means splitting into 4 equal parts. Now you will use fractions to split a group of things, like stars or grapes, into equal groups.
Zara has 8 apples and wants 1/4 of them. She shares the apples into 4 equal groups: 2 and 2 and 2 and 2. Each group is 1/4 of 8, so 1/4 of 8 apples is 2 apples.
To find a fraction of an amount, look at the bottom number. It tells you how many equal groups to make. Share the amount into that many equal groups, then count how many groups you need.
To find a fraction of an amount, split it into equal groups and count the groups you need.
